I would love to see another series with a new Capt. Kirk and crew. Perhaps another movie like Wrath of Khan, with Kirk battling a major war with the Klingons.

Still the best in the series, even counting the latest 2009 reboot! Has heart, a wonderful narrative story, and finally depicts starships with Roddenberry's conceptualization as virtually submarines in space. Probably the most honorable death on screen, desperately MOVING. Kudos to previously "non-fan" Nick Meyer, who himself rebooted the TV show for films, saying "for a person who genuinely professed not to understand Star Trek, I unexpectedly discovered that my involvement...was among the most rewarding of my professional life so far". Star Trek still has the capacity to make a fan out of almost anybody. Sadly JJ.Abrams is yet to reveal if he has a heart in the right place.

Picard (10 out of 10 )
An outstanding movie in every way—and not just as a Star Trek movie. Fantastic script and story, great characters, superb visual effects (that still hold up today), first-rate editing and direction, and a brilliant score. 2009's Star Trek is absolutely nowhere near the class of Wrath of Khan.

Fun fact: though he didn't take a writing credit, this script for Star Trek II was actually written by Nicholas Meyer himself (he combined all the best parts from each of the prior drafts). If this is truly a script from March 1982 (a mere 3 months before the movie debuted in theaters) then it's for sure the final shooting script, so it's interesting how much it still differs from the final product. A lot can change during filming and editing! Luckily in this case all the changes were for the better.- Most significant here is that Kirk has no clue he has a son until he meets Carol and David in the Regula cave. In the film only David is kept in the dark. This one's eyebrow-raising for me because it isn't the kind of change you could do through editing or ADR.- Speaking of offspring, the infamous child (or as the script puts it, "the CHILD") is still present in this script. Think this footage will ever see the light of day? (Another fun fact: when Chekov says they have to get out of there and Capt. Terrell responds "What about the tricorder", if you watch closely you can tell from Paul Winfield's lips he actually says "the child" and the line was rerecorded in post).- Curiously, I didn't spot any obvious moment that would necessitate a stunt person for Capt. Terrell (an article in "Jet" magazine at the time mentioned this film had a scene cut because Paul Winfield's stunt double was in blackface).- This has Spock's closing narration (added after initial filming) but not the sequence of Spock's coffin on the Genesis planet surface. I give this script a 9/10, and with the refinements made afterward the final film is a perfect 10.
